WORCESTER WARRIORS BOSS ON HIS BIKE FOR CHARITY

Sunday 15th September

Worcester Warriors’s Director of Rugby Dean Ryan is set to take to the saddle next month to support a charity bike ride in aid of the Wooden Spoon, the children’s charity of rugby. Ryan, who has taken charge of the Warriors in the Aviva Premiership this season, will be taking part in the Worcestershire Wheelie Fun Ride on Sunday, September 15.

Hundreds of cyclists will be part of the charity ride – covering either a 30 or 60 mile distance – with all money raised, including entry fees, going directly to the Wooden Spoon which is the Children’s Charity of Rugby, founded in 1983 and for over 30 years has been dedicated to helping disadvantaged children and young people. All monies raised by the event stay in the Worcestershire & Herefordshire area and will be used locally.

“The work of Wooden Spoon is crucially important and dedicated to helping disadvantaged children and young people live happier, richer lives,” said Ryan. “I’m looking forward to supporting the event and I hope as many Worcester fans as possible will also take to the saddle on the day to raise vital funds.”

The event already has many partners, including The Green Bike Company, Free Radio, CrownGate, Modus Creative, Listers Jaguar, The Quay, G4S, Worcester Warriors, Boston Tea Party and Sustrans.

John Gibson, local businessman and Chairman of Wooden Spoon; said ’ hard work and fantastic support from our partners will ensure that the Wheelie Fun Riders and Spoon supporters will have a fantastic first outing. The ride, post ride BBQ and presentation ensures that there is something for everyone on the day. If you fancy a challenge and want to know more about what Spoon does for disadvantaged children in our County, please register on the web site www.wheeliefunride.co.uk ‘Those that can’t quite manage the 30 or 60 miles this year can get in training early as we plan to make this fantastic event an annual thing’

The ride starts from The Green Bike Company on Bromyard Road at approximately 9am, with registrations from 8am and finishes at New Road. A Post ride presentation and BBQ, which is free for all riders, will follow a stone’s throw from the finish at The Quay.

The event will be led out by the Jaguar XF Sportbrake, official Sky Pro Cycling support vehicle, and will be kindly marshalled by volunteers from G4S the British multinational security services company. To ensure that everyone stays fully refreshed Boston Tea Party of Worcester will be at the two stop points in Cradley and Eastnor giving away homemade lemonade and snacks. For those riders that enjoy the view of the glorious Malvern’s that bit too much Free Radio with some help from the Green Bike Company will be on hand in the support vehicle at the rear of the ride.

For the non-riders there will be a day of activities down at The Quay with the chance to win the new Jaguar F- Type for the day, a BBQ and entertainment provided by Free Radio.

David Francis, Drive-Time presenter, from Free Radio, who is completing the ride with some of the Free radio team said: “We are so excited to be supporting the Wheelie Fun Ride. It’ll be a great day raising funds for such an amazing charity. The Wooden Spoon Charity does some great work around the region for children and their families who are desperately in need of their help.”

EDITORS NOTES:

British charity Wooden Spoon was founded in 1983 and for over 30 years has been dedicated to helping disadvantaged children and young people.

Through the generous team spirit of the rugby community and it’s top sporting heroes, we help youngsters across the British Isles live happier, richer lives.

Our charity work makes a difference to young people from the provision of diverse medical treatment and therapy facilities, sports and activity areas, community
clubs and outreach programs.

Wooden Spoon is the one of the UK’s leading funders of sensory rooms and gardens,
which are essential in the effective therapeutic treatment of people with sense or communication disorders. Our nationwide volunteer committees are full of great fundraising ideas, and Wooden Spoon ensures that the money raised
goes back into the local community.

Wooden Spoon has granted over £20 million to schools, hospitals, respite homes and hospices, other children’s charities and community projects. Inspired by our
rugby heritage, our core values of passion, integrity, teamwork, and fun
have so far benefitted over 1 million young people and children in need.

In 2011, Wooden Spoon received the International Rugby Board’s Spirit of Rugby Award
for our services in the charity sector. We are the only charity to have received this
